How to choose a carpet cleaner in Tampa Bay
A carpet cleaner is someone you let into your home, often while you’re at work or with kids and pets underfoot. Most are honest, hard-working local businesses. A few minutes of checking up front helps you find one of them, and avoid the bait-and-switch quote.
What to check before you call
- It’s a real business. A website of its own, a phone number that answers with the business name, and a Google Business Profile that matches. Lead-generation pages that pass your details to whoever bids are not the same thing.
- Trained technicians. The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) certifies carpet cleaning technicians and “Certified Firms”. You can check a firm yourself; see what IICRC certification means.
- A written satisfaction guarantee. Many cleaners promise to come back and re-clean a spot that reappears. Look for it in writing, and note any time limit.
- Insurance. Ask for proof of liability insurance before work starts. A business that states it is insured should be able to send a certificate.
- Published prices or a clear way of quoting: per room, per square foot or per item.
- Reviews you can read on the original platform, ideally recent ones that mention jobs like yours.
Of the 181 cleaners in our directory (as of November 5, 2026), 13 are matched as IICRC Certified Firms on the official register, 41 are certified on the register or state IICRC certification on their own site, 60 publish a satisfaction guarantee, 34 state they are insured and 25 publish prices. A missing item means we couldn’t confirm it, not that the business lacks it. Ask.
Questions to ask on the phone
- Which cleaning method will you use on my carpet, and how long will it take to dry? (See steam vs low-moisture cleaning.)
- How do you price: per room, per square foot, or a whole-house price? What counts as a room?
- What’s included, and what costs extra: pre-treatment, spot removal, stairs, hallways, moving furniture, protector?
- Are your technicians IICRC certified? Are you insured?
- What happens if a stain comes back after you leave?
- Is there a minimum charge or a trip fee for my area?
Watch for the low headline price
A very low price for several rooms can be genuine, but it is also a common way to get through the door and then sell add-ons on the day. Ask for the full price in writing before work starts, including anything the technician might recommend once they see the carpet. See reading a carpet cleaning quote.
On the day
- Vacuum first if you can, and move small items, breakables and anything on the floor.
- Point out stains and tell the technician what caused them, if you know. Pet urine, coffee and red wine are treated differently.
- Agree the price before the work begins, and get any changes agreed before they happen.
- Ask how long to stay off the carpet and whether to run fans or the air conditioning to help it dry.
